Gordon Moore (1929–2023) was an American chemist and engineer who co-founded Intel and gave his name to Moore’s law, the observation that the number of transistors on a chip doubles at a steady cadence.1

Life and work

Moore began at Fairchild Semiconductor, where he worked on early silicon integrated circuits. In a 1965 article he noted that the transistor count on a chip had been doubling roughly every year (later revised to about every two years) and projected the trend forward — a forecast that became the semiconductor industry’s guiding expectation.1 In 1968 he co-founded Intel with Robert Noyce, where he served as a long-time executive and chairman.1

Why they matter

Moore’s law framed decades of planning: chipmakers, software writers, and product designers all assumed compute and memory would get cheaper and denser on schedule. That steady cheapening is why a fingernail-sized SDR dongle or a small board near an antenna can now do DSP that once needed a rack of equipment. Moore’s leadership at Intel helped make the microprocessor a mass-market product.1

Legacy

Though the literal doubling has slowed, “Moore’s law” remains shorthand for the relentless improvement in computing per dollar that shaped the digital age — and that put real-time multi-channel decoding within reach of hobbyist hardware.
