- Battery-bay corrosion. Leaked alkalines are the most common FR200 killer. Open the bay and look before anything else; walk away from green fuzz on the contacts.
- The crank gearbox. Crank 30–60 seconds: the radio should play, and you should hear smooth whirring, not grinding. FR200 gearboxes are sturdier than later models’, but 20-year-old grease dries out and stiffens.
- The NiMH pack. Assume it’s tired; it’s a user-swappable $10 part (or just run alkalines), so a dead pack is a bargaining chip, not a disqualifier.
- Dial-cord tuning. The analog needle should track the full dial without slipping or sticking — dial-cord wear is the FR200’s fiddliest repair.
