Antenna mounting hardware is the collection of small steel parts that actually holds an install together: U-bolts, mast clamps, and saddle / V-bolt clamps. They are the cheapest components in an outdoor antenna build and, pound for pound, the ones most likely to fail if you buy the wrong grade — because they are what stands between your mast, your antenna, and the wind.
What it is
- U-bolts — a U-shaped bolt that passes around a pipe and through a backing plate or bracket, clamped with two nuts. The universal fastener for attaching an antenna to a mast, or a mast to a tripod, eave bracket, or chimney mount.
- V-bolt / saddle clamps — a U-bolt whose block is cut with a V or saddle so it seats round pipe on two contact lines instead of one flat face. That grip resists twisting far better, which is what keeps a directional antenna from slewing off heading in a gust.
- Mast-to-mast brackets — a plate with a pair of V-jaw blocks and U-bolts that locks two pipes together, either in line (to extend a mast) or at a right angle (to stand one pipe off another). The building block of most improvised supports.
Sizing is the one thing to get right: the U-bolt’s inner width must match your pipe’s outer diameter, commonly 1 to 2 inches for scanner masts. Too large and it cannot clamp; too small and it will not close.
Why it matters
A single clamp point is the classic install mistake. One U-bolt lets an antenna rotate under wind load, so a discone slowly turns or a beam drifts off aim, and the repeated flexing works the coax connection loose at the top. Two spaced clamp points — two U-bolts, or a V-jaw block that grips on two lines — fix the heading and stop the twist.
Material grade is the other quiet failure. Bright-zinc hardware looks fine in the bag and rusts within a season or two on a roof, seizing the nuts and loosening the joint. Hot-dip galvanised or stainless steel costs a couple of dollars more and lasts the life of the install — cheap insurance against a ladder trip to free a rusted bolt.
