The 7600 family was Sony’s flat, coat-pocket travel line, and the GR was its final, fully-evolved form: dual conversion, LW through 30 MHz plus FM, SSB via a clarifier, and the synchronous detector that made its name — lock it to a fading broadcast carrier, pick the cleaner sideband, and interference and selective fading simply calm down in a way DSP soft-mute-era radios still don’t match. The AGC is famously composed, the build is bulletproof, and the external antenna jack even powers Sony’s active antennas (AN-LP1).3

  3. Battery bay — 4×AA radios that sat in drawers grow alkaline corrosion; ask for photos of the contacts and the serial.
  4. Function test — verify sync locks on both sidebands, SSB is on-frequency, and all display/backlight segments work.
  5. Identity check — cheap listings (~$50) are usually the much older non-GR ICF-SW7600 or SW7600G at a glance-alike price. Verify the GR suffix before paying GR money; the actual bargains run the other direction.

Original box and AC adapter add value. Priced against a recap and an unknown history, a $250 “works great” attic unit and a $350 recapped, tested one can be the same deal.
