The Drake R8B is the classic tabletop shortwave receiver — the last radio R.L. Drake built (1997–2004) and the one nearly every “greatest receiver” list puts on top.1 Its selectable-sideband synchronous AM detector is widely rated the best ever fitted to a tabletop, its audio is the standard for program listening, and it has been out of production for two decades: the used market — eBay, estate sales, SWL classifieds — is where it lives, at roughly $550–1,100.

Overview
In 1997 the R8B was the final refinement of Drake’s R8 line, and it closed out American tabletop receiver manufacturing on a high: 100 kHz–30 MHz coverage, five bandwidth filters standard (6.0/4.0/2.3/1.8/0.5 kHz) where rivals made you buy them, passband offset, a notch filter, 1,000 memories, and the detector that made its name — selectable-sideband synchronous AM, which locks onto a broadcast carrier and lets you pick the cleaner sideband when interference or selective fading chews on the other one.2 For music and voice off the shortwave broadcast bands, nothing in the classic era sounds better.
It isn’t flawless: the lime-green LED display divides opinion, the tuning knob is light and flywheel-less, and the ergonomics trail the Japanese competition. Owners forgive all of it the moment a weak signal locks in sync.
Be honest with yourself about the bands, too. The big Western broadcasters have largely left shortwave; what remains — international broadcasters, time stations, utility and HF traffic, ham SSB, pirates — is real but quieter than the R8B’s own heyday. - Display segments. Check every digit of the green LED display lights.

Used-market viability: among the best of any classic. The faults are few and specific, the fixes documented, and demand stays deep enough that a well-bought R8B has historically held its money — which is also why a patient buyer beats an eager one.
