The Sony ICF-2010 is the most beloved shortwave radio ever made — the 1985 breakthrough that put selectable-sideband synchronous detection, still benchmark-grade today, into an affordable receiver, and stayed in production for some 17 years (as the ICF-2001D in export markets).1 Technically it’s a large portable, not a tabletop — it’s the one honorary member of our desktop list — and it’s been discontinued for over two decades: the used market is where it lives, at an honest $150–350.

Radio reviewers call the ICF-2010 “the standard of comparison”, and it earned the title the direct way: for two decades, every new high-end portable was judged against it and most lost.1 The feature that mattered was sync — lock the carrier, pick the cleaner sideband, and selective fading’s garble turns back into program audio. Sony got it so right in 1985 that the detector still holds its own against anything short of a Drake R8B. Around it: 150 kHz–30 MHz coverage plus FM and the 116–136 MHz air band, SSB/CW, wide/narrow AM filters, and 32 memories on direct-access buttons — press one, get a station, a UI some modern radios still haven’t matched.

Judged by 2026 standards it shows its age: 100 Hz tuning steps with muting artifacts on SSB, dated audio, and a famous fragility (below). And judge the bands honestly too — the big Western broadcasters are gone from shortwave, and what remains (international broadcasters, time signals, utility traffic, ham SSB, pirates) is quieter than the 2010’s golden years. The 2010’s faults are famous, specific, and mostly cheap to fix — which is why untested units are a gamble and tested ones carry a premium:1

  1. The blown front-end FET — THE fault. Static through the external antenna jack kills the input FET and with it most of the sensitivity; such units circulate widely. The test: tuning from 1620.0 to 1620.1 kHz, the hiss should audibly drop; no drop = blown FET. The fix is a cheap MPF102-class JFET (kits sold on eBay). Ask every seller for this test result — it’s the whole price of the radio.
  2. Memory-battery contacts. The AA backup-cell contacts corrode or lose contact, and the radio “dies” or dumps its memories; removing all batteries resets a hung CPU. Ask for battery-bay photos.
  3. Pushbuttons — intermittent keys are common; work every one.
  4. Battery-bay corrosion and the headphone jack.

Clean tested units ask $180–250; rough ones go lower (EU mixed-condition listings median around €120), and collectors pay near $1,000 for sealed boxed examples. The hobbyist repair ecosystem is superb — this is one classic you can realistically fix yourself.

Used-market viability: excellent, with one asterisk. Supply is deep (that 17-year production run), the repair ecosystem is the best of any radio on our list, and parts kits are a few dollars — but the number of blown-front-end units in circulation means the untested market is a minefield. A seller who answers the 1620 kHz question is selling a radio; a seller who won’t is selling a lottery ticket.
