The Kenwood R-5000 is the dependable classic — Kenwood’s last dedicated shortwave receiver (introduced 1986/87, built until about 1996) and the radio most often recommended as a first serious used tabletop.1 It sits a step below the Drake/AOR/JRC tier in every ranking but costs less: figure roughly $450–700 for a clean working unit on the used market — eBay, hamfests, SWL classifieds — which is the only place it lives.

The R-5000 is what Japan Inc. tabletop engineering looked like at its confident peak: dual conversion covering 100 kHz–30 MHz, excellent SSB, good dynamic range, IF shift, a notch filter, 100 memories, dual clocks with a timer, and slots for Kenwood’s excellent optional YK-series crystal filters that turn it into a genuinely selective DX machine.2 Audio is better than average for the breed. The VC-20 option adds 108–174 MHz VHF. What it never got is synchronous AM detection — the one spec that keeps it out of the top tier against the Drake R8B.
It shares DNA and an era with the TS-940S transceiver, including the era’s liabilities: nearly forty-year-old electrolytics, a PLL with a famous aging fault, and an internal AC supply that runs the radio hot. None of that is a reason not to buy one — it’s the frame for how to buy one, below.
Also frame the hobby honestly: the major Western broadcasters have left shortwave, and what remains — international broadcasters, time signals, utility/HF traffic, ham SSB, pirates — is real but quieter than the R-5000’s 1980s heyday. Whatever you buy, remember that a $20 wire antenna out a window improves reception more than a $200 radio upgrade.

Buying used: what to check
This is the highest-maintenance radio on our list — well documented, very fixable, but go in with the checklist:1
- The “dot problem.” Conductive aging potting goo on the PLL board makes the PLL unlock: the display shows dots and the radio acts as if the dial is turning. It’s the signature R-5000 fault, the fix is well documented, and commercial repair (e.g. Jahnke Electronics) exists. Ask if it’s been done — this is question one.
- Keybounce. Dried electrolytics cause keypad misreads and double entries; recap kits are available.
- The display. Fluorescent display failures happen and replacements are scarce — get a photo of every segment lit.
- Heat. The internal AC supply cooks the radio over decades; prefer units run on the DCK-2 12 V kit or an external supply.
- Recap and alignment history. A full recap is common at this age; priced-in if absent.
Asks run $250 (rough) to $1,300 (pristine); clean working units typically change hands at $450–700, but that band is built from asking prices — check eBay sold listings before you pay. Working for you: excellent documentation and one of the most active repair scenes of any classic.
Used-market viability: high maintenance, high support. Every known fault has a documented fix, commercial repair exists, and the recap/dot-fix knowledge base is deep — so a serviced R-5000 is a safe long-term keeper, and an unserviced one is a known-quantity project rather than a mystery. Price the difference between the two accordingly; it’s real money.
